Bike Friday Developments

Yet more changes in the model line up were announced in June. While change can be a good thing, and we would not want the model range to stagnate, the frequent changes in marketing strategy at Green Gear seem quite bewildering to outsiders. There is insufficient space here to detail all the changes and the new prices, so we will just mention the most significant developments.

All the existing models seem to remain available, but with some specification changes, most notably that most are available in a Bike Friday Select specification at the bottom of the specification options. In terms of price, these low specification options, and the omission of the case, mean that prices generally start at the levels before the large price rise last September. For example, a Pocket Rocket with 3x7 gearing, dropped bars and bar end changers starts at $1095, the 9 x 2 derailleur Shimano 105 version costing $1549; a NWT in 3x7 Select for with MTB bars and Rapidfire levers starts at $995, with a 3x8 version with Shimano 105 and STI priced at $1495.

Two new models seem to have been added to the range – an ultra lightweight Pocket Rocket Pro and a Triple. The Pocket Rocket Pro costs $2095 with Shimano 105 components in 9 x 2 derailleur configuration with STI levers and dropped bars, while the price rises to $3495 with Record components. The Triple is available from $1795 with 3x7 gearing. The Pocket Rocket Pro continues to use the 451 sized wheels, while the Triple uses the smaller diameter, 406 sized wheels used on the majority of the models.
